2026-08-06A summer of rebuilding
The Knicks closed out the 2026 playoffs in June, and we spent the
weeks after taking the site apart and putting it back together. The short
version: the archive is finally complete, and most of what you look at got
rebuilt underneath.
Every game, every year
This is the big one. Until now most seasons only carried series results — who
won, and how many games. Now all 43 seasons from 1984 to
2026 carry every game of every series, with its date, both
scores, and which team was at home. That’s 3,375 games, up from 991, and every
one of them was read against basketball-reference.
Checking that carefully turned up things we’d had wrong for years. Two seasons
had their Eastern seeding transposed, which quietly put the right games in the
wrong series. Two dozen games had home and away backwards. A handful had the
wrong score. And every nba.com game link was built per series rather than per
game, so half of them pointed at the wrong host team. All fixed.
Home and away, at a glance
The little game circles used to be two shades of green, which asked you to tell
colors apart at 16 pixels. Home is now a filled circle and away is an outline.
A difference in shape survives a printout, a grayscale screen, and color
blindness in a way two greens don’t — and there’s a key on the page now saying
so.
A theme switcher, finally
Back in 2023 we added dark mode and said we wanted a manual toggle to go with
it. It’s here. A button at the end of the nav cycles through light, dark, and
follow-your-system, and picking a theme in one tab now carries to your other
open tabs. While we were in there we swept the whole site for text that didn’t
meet WCAG AA contrast in either theme, and rebuilt the mobile round switcher as
real buttons so it works from a keyboard.
Logos, from three copies to one
Every team’s era-correct logo now comes from a single canonical set of artwork
instead of three overlapping ones. Champions on the season list wear
the crest they actually wore that year. We also found that the logo files shared
generic internal names, so on some pages one team’s artwork was quietly
borrowing pieces of another’s.
The nicest side effect: a bracket page now ships only the logos it actually
shows. 1984 had been carrying ten franchises that didn’t exist yet, and its page
got 40% smaller.
Also new since June: the Timberwolves 2026-27 logo, and
the logo gallery extended through 2026.
Under the hood
Hugo and Sass are up to date, stylesheets and scripts are served with proper
cache-busting, and a pile of dead files went in the bin. Nothing you’d see,
except the site loading faster.
Next season
The 2027 bracket is already up, and once the season tips off it
will re-seed itself from the standings every morning.
